Windhorse Recovery Farm: Update
The number of Autistic (ASD) individuals in our communities is increasing at alarming rates. Financial and early intervention supports for ASD children, youth, and young adults, (until the age of 22), are mandated by Federal and State legislation. As ASD individuals age and become adults, (after the age of 22), financial and other resource supports decline and are no longer in place to meet the unique and growing needs of ASD adults.
The Windhorse Recovery Farm will be a working farm for Autistic (ASD) adults, (*adults with a variety of extreme mind states and/or behavioral challenges will also be welcome). Based in Petaluma, Sonoma County, California, the Windhorse Recovery Farm is designed to provide social skills training and therapeutic support to increase levels of engagement allowing participants to function at higher levels within local communities. Farm products produced on the farm, (eggs, goat cheese, vegetables and honey) will be sold locally at farmer’s markets and farm-to-table restaurants. Proceeds from the sale of farm products will fund scholarships for individuals who would not otherwise be able to participate.
A suitable property with proper acreage for farming, and the build-out of a community hall and other necessary structures is being sought currently. Once obtained, Phase I, initiating the build-out of support structures for farming and community gatherings will begin. Phase II, the build-out of housing structures to meet short term therapeutic needs, followed by Phase III, the build-out of housing structures to meet longer term needs will ensue thereafter. Providing Veterans recovering from PTSD and multiple TBIs (Traumatic Brain Injury) the opportunity to contribute to building and maintaining farm structures, while being an integral part of the community itself, is a vision Sherri has in thanks for the profundity of their service. Providing a place of belonging and appreciation for the depth of their skills to benefit others is something all communities should be providing Veterans returning from service.
